This modern adobe house is filled with history and designed by John Byers, a leading architect of LA in the early decades of 20th century; recently bought by a recording company moghul.

Dutton Architects was in charge on the renovation, they did a great job in respecting the original history of the house as well as making it suitable for modern style living.

Entering the outside part

The design proposed by Dutton Architects play around the idea about simple rooms encircling a courtyard and connected by a steep roof; it’s an interpretation of Hacienda, a Spanish-style courtyard house.

The house doesn’t really need modern air conditioning, with the building is shaded and cooled passively and the floor surfaces has radiant heat, they made to turn on the AC not necessary.

Vestibule to Kitchen

There’s a new kitchen across the entrance hall facing the living room; it’s actually an additional part of the original house. It has a pair of wooden doors that when it’s closed, it separates the kitchen along with the living-room from the entrance hall. When the panelled wooden doors are opened, it makes a big and continuous connection that goes through both sides of the house.

A Big Restored Living Area

There are many interesting features in the original living area such as tall wooden supports, a big fireplace, wooden floors and ceilings, and that beautiful french doors. The restoration done by Dutton Architects includes sandblasting the wooden supports and ceiling, refurbishing the fireplace, restoring the original adobe walls, replacing the windows and doors, and installing a new heat-radiant floor.

A modern kitchen

This kitchen was originally designed to be equipped with modern details - cabinetry made of white-oak, Caesarstone counters, etc, and Dutton Architects improved the details carefully to improve the toughness.

Master Bathroom of Stone, Wood, and Light

There are some interesting features in the master bedroom, such as the vaulted ceiling in it is made from stained douglas fir, and the floor made from limestone. Other features include a freestanding cabinet made from walnut that has another function as a toilet divider, and a lime-stone counter integrates with the tall cabinet. Another thing worth-to-mention is the large window next to the tub; as it opens it feels like bathing in the garden, with a view of a fountain outside creating a serene atmosphere.

A home office

This historical modern adobe house also has a home office in the outside area that is situated between the house and the main bedroom suite. The terrace’s terracotta floors leads into this place, and its high wood-ceilings are the extension of the pergola roof. There’s a fireplace to warm warming the room that is made to consolidate with the ridge skylight. In this place, light comes to the place from two sides as well as from the ceiling, that further enhance the room to be a room with outdoor-feeling.

An outdoor room

The adobe house roof extend to the outdoor room; this place can be utilized for many events like day lounging, casual dining, or just have a good evening time by the fireplace.
The roof and flooring in the place is match with those in pergola, with its fireplace and big walls along with the custom-made-full-of –history iron chandelier, thus make it like an actual room.

A pool house

The more contemporary guest house is designed by Dutton Architects Firm as an addition of modern touch for the original adobe house. It used pretty much the same building materials as the original main building, but implemented in more contemporary ways. The contractor made the plaster walls to have more precise corners compared to the originals. Also, the wood details was designed with minimalist style and more modern composition made of mahogany woods to replace the old details made of douglas fir.

All in all, this place is one stellar example of modern adobe houses that still preserve their historical originality and at the same time has answers for modern-style living demands.
